Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Overview
The Department was founded in 2004 under the College of Science of Technology and has grown rapidly since then. The present undergraduate student population is 290. The academic staff of 13 includes three Professors, a Senior Professor on sabbatical and a Senior Lecturer with extensive industrial experience. A Senior Fulbright scholar (Associate Professor) will arrive in September 2010 for the 2010/2011 Academic Session.
The Department last October commissioned a new set of laboratory equipment which includes an extraction unit, a distillation unit, a vacuum freeze dryer and a spray dryer. With this additional acquisition we are now in a position to cover the wide field of chemical engineering education this millennium.
In view of the expected opening of the Postgraduate programme to the external context, the Department will be further strengthened to research into the effective utilization of locally available raw materials for industry. The Department has started with the production of zeolites from clays in the Abeokuta region. Zeolites have extensive industrial use which is not restricted to the refinery or petrochemicals –the present main stay of the Nigerian economy. Other raw materials of the region such as tar sands which have serious industrial applications will be our next target.
The final year projects are designed to prepare students for the larger society. Thus the topics usually cover applications of chemical engineering in diverse areas such as agriculture, health, and shelter – i.e. key areas identified in the Vision 20-2020 of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Millennium Development Goals.
We regularly get feedback from our graduates and we are happy to inform you that most of our graduates are employed shortly after Youth Service and a good number venture into small scale projects in collaboration with senior colleagues that graduated before them.
We are glad to welcome you to a forward looking Chemical Engineering Department that is raising a new generation of leaders, and wish you a pleasant stay.
Vision
The Department aspires to world-class status in the nearest future, with her products well versed not only in the theoretical principles but also in the practical applications of the discipline.
Philosophy and Objectives
Philosophy
Nigeria is becoming an industrialized nation. Many industries are either oil-based or gas-based. Though the chemical and food industry is still in its infancy in Nigeria, especially in the area of local content, a number of industries are springing up utilizing the various agro and mineral raw materials available in the country. Internationally, there is a projection of a dearth of qualified chemical engineers in the next decade. The chemical engineering programme in Covenant University aims at training qualified engineers that can operate and manage industries in Nigeria and fill the international vacuum in the very near future. The training is to produce graduates, who are producers of goods and services, and who, upon graduation, are functional engineers in industries, researchers, scholars in academia, or successful entrepreneurs in Chemical Engineering-propelled ventures. The training is designed to place the graduates on the leading edge of technology.
Objectives
- To put in place curricula that cover broad and dynamic engineering principles, working knowledge of entrepreneurial, marketing and management principles.
- To empower our students with necessary skills to create value and bring solutions needed to tackle challenges in the chemical and allied industries.
- To make our graduates foremost Chemical engineers in the country and internationally through well-designed competency-based training programmes of teaching and research.
- To facilitate acquisition of practical work experience in the industries.
- To inculcate discipline in research and development to chemical engineering graduates.
Admission Requirements
The minimum entry requirement for admission into Chemical Engineering programme is O’ level SSCE/GCE/NECO Credit level pass in five (5) subjects, including English and Mathematics, physics, chemistry, and either credit pass in Further Mathematics, Biology, or Technical Drawing.
