Summary of Profile

Professor Kayode Soremekun was born in Lagos, Nigeria on May 21, 1953.
Professor Kayode Soremekun attended Nigeria’s Premier secondary grammar school, King’s College, Lagos, where he was a Scholarship Student. After leaving King’s College in 1971, he proceeded to the University of Ife, (UNIFE) where he was designated as a National Award Scholar (1973 – 1976) in view of his sterling performance in the first year. Ultimately, he bagged a trinity of degrees (BA, M.Sc, and Ph.D) in English/History and International Relations at UNIFE, Nigeria.
Professor Soremekun’s education in Nigeria has since been complemented by post-doctoral studies at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands and the University of Maryland, College Park in the United States of America. In these two contexts, he respectively studied International Law (1988) and the US Foreign Policy Process; (1991)
A public-spirited academic, Professor Soremekun, occupies the critical interface between academia on one hand and journalism on the other.
In the latter context, Professor Kayode Soremekun has served on the Editorial Boards of various newspapers. These include: The Daily Times; The Guardian; The A.M. News; The Champion and The Compass.
Since, 1982 Professor Kayode Soremekun has been involved in teaching and research in three Nigerian Universities: Obafemi Awolowo University; University of Lagos and Covenant University. In the area of University administration, he has served as Dean, Faculty of Administration, and Head, Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University; subsequently he served as Head, Department of Political Science, University of Lagos.
Beyond Nigeria, he has had teaching, research and conference experience in diverse social formations like: Spain, Senegal, Canada, the United States of America, South Africa, Ghana, Italy, United Kingdom, Kenya, Gambia, France, Tanzania and Austria.
In the course of his teaching and research career, Professor Kayode Soremekun has also been the recipient of a number of competitive and prestigious International Fellowships.
These include: Senior Fulbright Research Fellowship; Rockefeller Residency Fellowship, in Bellagio, Italy; Association of African Universities Fellowship; Salzburg Fellowship; Ford Foundation Fellowship; and Netherlands Fellowship for International Development.
Professor Soremekun has also served as a consultant to a number of organizations like: The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, The Commonwealth, Henrich Boll Foundation and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, IDEA.
He is married to another academic, Dr. Rebecca Soremekun, and between them, they have six daughters
