I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Psychology, School of Human Resource Development, College of Development Studies. Right from time immemorial, psychology has been regarded as a scientific study of human and animal behaviour, both normal and abnormal. The discipline employs the scientific method in carrying out its teachings and other undertakings. Therefore, as a science, psychology seeks to discover patterns, using facts, principles and generalizations so as to increase knowledge, understanding and control of behaviour in various social and cultural settings, groups, institutions and organizations.
Psychology started as a programme with other disciplines such as Sociology, Counselling, Philosophy and Human Development in October 2002 under former College of Human Development. In September 2004 the Department was changed to Human Resource Development, with both the Psychology and Counselling programmes. In September 2009, the Department was re-named Department of Psychology.
The Department currently has a complement of a distinguished professor and fifteen other full-time Faculty and two non-teaching staff. More than 50% of the academic staff possesses doctorate degree, and the others have all reached advanced stage in their doctoral studies.
I know that your reasons for coming to this Department, among others, is to learn about the intricacies surrounding the behaviour of human beings with a view to using the knowledge to positively impact the family, organisations, institutions and the entire world as a whole. The Department has a number of attainable objectives, which are clearly spelt out in the departmental handbook. It is expected that students and staff of the Department tailor their academic and non academic endeavours towards the realization of these laudable objectives so as to take the Department to greater heights.
I also seize this opportunity to intimate you with the need to ensure that University’s rules and regulations, which are made available in the University Handbook, serve as your watchword. The consequences of disobeying rules and regulations governing your behaviours in the university can be grievous.

The Department of Psychology is fully committed to the liberation of Mankind through the vehicle of university education relevant to societal needs and goals. These are graduates who will be mentally resourceful, intellectually equipped, entrepreneurially self-dependent, futuristically visionary, and responsibility sensitive.
The Department shall strive to train and equip men and women to face the challenges of life using the platform of our rich ethos and set curriculum and pursue human development-driven curriculum with emphasis on the development of the total man.
Philosophy and Objectives
The philosophy behind the Psychology Programme Curriculum in Covenant University is to equip the students with adequate and relevant skills and abilities that will enable them understand, predict, condition, control and change human and animal behaviours, leading to the overall social, economic, political development of the Nigerian society at large. We shall instil a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity in the students; provide them with a broad and balanced foundation of psychological knowledge; enable students to acquire the ability to apply their knowledge to the analysis of psychological issues; and imbibe in them students a range of transferable skills that will be of value to the industry.
The main objectives of the programme are:
- Equip and empower graduates with practical skills of managing overt and covert behaviours of personnel working in diverse sectors of the economy;
- Produce graduates who are psychologically adjusted to occupy leadership position in their areas of operation;
- Train graduates who are psychologically and mentally equipped to meet requirements for employment in the labour market thereby contributing to the eradication of unemployment and poverty in Nigeria;
- Develop in graduates a broad, balance and analytical psychological knowledge necessary for understanding and resolving health related challenges such as HIV/AIDS;
- Produce graduates with a wide range of human development knowledge processes as it relates to and improve on family, school, and workplace bond;
- Equip students with a broad range of cognitive and practical skills necessary for carrying out empirical research directed at resolving psycho-socio-economic challenges of the nation.
- Make students sufficiently confident to engage in intellectual discourse and debates of psychological relevance in an independent manner.
Justification for the Programmes in the Department
The society is dynamic, with developmental issues posing challenges to man. Successful living and fulfillment in work and business require a very strong psychological base. The psychology programme offers professional courses of instruction in all aspects of psychology with the aim of positioning our students for the challenges of contemporary times.
As a field of study, psychology has many specialized subjects. Some of these include clinical psychology, developmental psychology, industrial / organizational psychology, educational psychology, personnel psychology, experimental psychology, counseling psychology, consumer psychology, social psychology, forensic psychology, health / medical psychology, military psychology. Most of these areas are not offered separately at the undergraduate level, but until the postgraduate years.
In all, psychology covers such broad areas of human existence and experience as individuals and groups with particular reference to the various areas of people’s functioning. The psychology programme at Covenant University is a combination of theoretical, practical as well as skill-based experimental learning. At the end of the four-year Programme, students of the discipline would have been thoroughly equipped with a secure knowledge base to face the challenges and conflicts that may arise, using both qualitative and quantitative tools necessary for the attainment of denied responses.
Candidates must have five (5) credit level passes in Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science and any two (2) Social Science subjects. The credit passes should be at not more than two (2) sittings.
