The Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University and Landmark University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, has charged the Management and Professorate of both institutions to strive for enhanced improvement in the discharge of their responsibilities so as to command better results.

He gave the charge on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at a one day leadership emphasis session with the theme, The Leadership Edge: Qualitative and Transformational Leadership for Sustainable Results’, organized by the African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) in Covenant University.

The Chancellor, while declaring the session open, said there is nothing mystical about excellence as it’s simply a product of one’s tireless commitment to improvement, adding that one can’t keep track of improvement without renewed commitment to learning new skills, and there is no end to commanding better results.

According to him, “The largest room in the world is the room for improvement. There is a need for enhanced improvement of our beats. We are where we are by the dint of what we know; if we know better, we go higher”.

The black man, he said, can lead, but just lost his sense of esteem, just as the black man can solve his own problem, but seek to transfer responsibility. “But nobody will take your responsibility for you. We are the ones raising these individuals; how do they become new generation leaders if we don’t show them what leadership is at our various levels of engagements,” he stated.

Dr. Oyedepo expressed joy that people with leadership pedigree were present as facilitators at the session, and hoped that the programme will enhance the rate of results in leadership engagements of the management and professorate of both Covenant and Landmark Universities.

Earlier in her introductory speech, the Director, ALDC, and second substantive Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Aize Obayan, said that the leadership emphasis session was the brainchild of the Chancellor in line with his fulfilment of the vision of Covenant University and Landmark University in raising a new generation of global leaders. She noted that presentations to be made at the session would be looking at several aspects of leadership that will no doubt sharpen the thoughts of participants.

“There is a spirit of leadership and we have seen this demonstrated in the life of the Chancellor. It is my prayer and belief that this virtue will touch our spirit and we will run with it,” she enthused.

Professor Obayan said that the vision of the ALDC is to evolve a centre of excellence in leadership development, and the centre is committed to nurturing and transforming leaders for Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. She added that the ALDC is committed to seeing that, across all operations in Covenant University and Landmark University, new generation of leaders are raised.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, who acknowledged that the University has a compelling vision, said it is not often that people drive a vision and have the visioner right in their midst. “We have a leader par excellence in our midst, talking about our own dear Chancellor that has deemed it fit for us to have this session; a session where our skill in leadership will be honed so that we take leadership to the next level,” he stated.

Apprising the audience with information on recent accomplishments of Covenant University, Professor Atayero said Covenant has taken the lead in a number of competencies in the Nigerian education landscape, with the University emerging number one in the field of Engineering in Nigeria; number one in the field of Computer Science in Nigeria; and number one in the field of Decision Sciences in Nigeria, adding that the accomplished feats are testimonies to the fact that, “we have a leader in the house”.

Facilitators at the event included the Chancellor, Covenant and Landmark Universities, Dr. David O. Oyedepo; former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola; pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Placid Njoku; and 2nd and 4th substantive Vice-Chancellors of Covenant University, Professors Obayan and Atayero.
