The Executive Director, Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr. Joseph Adeyeye with Staffs and Students of Department of Languages

Students of the Department of Languages, Covenant University, have been exposed to the essential attributes needed to have a successful career in the media.

Enlightening the students at a recent Town and Gown seminar, the Executive Director, Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr. Joseph Adeyeye, who was the Guest Speaker, explained the transformation going on in the media and the diverse opportunities available for the language students to have a successful media career.

Mr. Adeyeye, who was represented by an Assistant Editor at Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr. Akeem Lasisi, said in his presentation titled, ‘Vital Potentials for a Successful Career in the Media’, that “good knowledge of language is one of the crucial ways to be exceptional in the media. Also, have a sense of observation to know what content is newsworthy and that can drive audience engagement”.

He said that to be successful in the media, an individual must have the enduring spirit to work during odd hours and above all, build his or her character to stay at the top of the media career.

In his words, “Every form of media is populated with lots of contents day by day, especially the digital media, and to be exceptional in your delivery, you must have good diction, have a nose for news, be able to work at odd hours and build your character because that’s what keeps an individual at the top”.

The seasoned journalist, who read English Language in his undergraduate days, also informed the students that their course of study has automatically given them an edge in the media industry because of their background in English. He, however, urged the students to be creative by providing an answer to “What can I offer?” and opt for improvement in spoken communication.

The Town and Gown seminar is a platform for fostering working relationship between the academia and the industry.
