Integrity, Excellence Spur Civil Engineers to Career Success, says Expert
With integrity and excellence, a civil engineer is assured of a successful career, according to a seasoned practitioner, Engr. (Mrs) Adenike Akinrinde.
She advised students of the Department of Civil Engineering, Covenant University, to ensure and maintain standards within the ethics of the profession using the code of practice, and to also be outstanding and be the best.
Engr. Akinrinde, who was Guest Speaker at the Town and Gown Seminar of the Civil Engineering Department held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, where he delivered a lecture titled, ‘My Roles as a Civil Engineer in Nation Building’, said that architects, as solution providers, should drive their skills with passion, while maintaining integrity, quality and excellence at all levels.
The core values of a civil engineer, according to the Guest Lecturer, were skill, passion, discipline, integrity, and excellence. She charged student civil engineers to develop their skills and be marketable; to see their passion as important, be disciplined, have integrity, and cultivate excellence.
Engr. Akinrinde described a civil engineer as one who “plans, designs and oversees construction and maintenance of building structures and infrastructures (civil structures). They create, improve and protect the environment in which we live”. She added that specialized areas in civil engineering included structural, environmental – water supply networks, drainage, and highways.
While speaking on the societal expectations of a civil engineer, Engr. Akinrinde, who is a Chartered Registered Engineer and member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, stated that a civil engineer was expected to proffer solutions to environmental problems, and design/create what would improve living conditions. A civil engineer, she said, could achieve these by being skillful in his field. She urged the student civil engineers to acquire skill outside the classroom.
The Guest Lecturer appreciated Covenant University for putting in place core values for the institution, which she said could spur students to achieving excellence in their education and in the world of work.
Earlier in his remarks, the Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Engr. (Professor) David Olukanni, said Covenant strived to improve the quality of her products by exposing them, as students, to what they were likely to encounter in the industry after graduation. While describing the Guest Lecturer as a civil engineer of repute who had a lot to impart in the students, he urged them to be attentive in order to gain something from the lecture.
Aside the students, also present at the seminar were the immediate past Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Anthony Ede, faculty and staff of the Department.
The seminar was the second in the series of Town and Gown Seminar in the Civil Engineering Department for Alpha Semester of the 2019/2020 Academic Session.
