Natural Chemicals Improve Flow of Waxy Crude Oil

Cheaper natural chemicals, obtained from plant seeds (jatropha – JSO, rubber – RSO and castor – CSO), had better influence on the solid and fluid characteristics of the Nigerian waxy crude oil than previously used synthetic chemicals (triethanolamine and xylene), according to the result of an investigation carried out by a team of researchers from Covenant University and the Lagos State University.

Dr. Vincent Efeovbokhan and Dr. Ayodeji Ayoola (Covenant University), including Dr. Joseph Udonne and Peter Akinyemi (Lagos State University) had in their study titled, ‘A Study on the Use of Plant Seed Oils, Triethanolamine and Xylene as Flow Improvers of Nigerian Waxy Crude Oil’, submitted that chemical methods are the most convenient and economical for wax precipitation and deposition prevention.

After using four different crude oil samples obtained from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for the study, they found out that jatropha and castor seed oils improve the flow of the crude than the previously investigated triethanolamine.
