The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, has charged the faculty and staff of the institution to embrace a culture of responsible and exemplary leadership as they proceed on their annual leave.
Speaking at the Closing Assembly for the 2024/2025 academic session, Dr. Oyedepo emphasized that true leadership is not merely acquired by position but earned through hard work, sacrifice, and selfless service to humanity. He admonished the University workforce to take responsibility in their various spheres of influence, stressing that responsibility is the pathway to greatness.
Drawing inspiration from biblical figures such as Joseph, Daniel, and Paul, the Chancellor highlighted how their resilience, commitment, and sense of responsibility enabled them to overcome challenges and leave indelible marks in history. He urged faculty and staff not to focus on personal gains but to continue to give their very best in service, noting that greatness comes not by what one takes, but by what one gives.
“Joseph and Daniel became exceptional leaders in foreign lands because they embraced responsibility and remained prayerful. The same principle applies to us in Africa today; responsibility is the antidote to mediocrity, and it is what we need to take our rightful place on the global stage,” he asserted.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, expressed deep appreciation to the faculty and staff for their commitment and dedication throughout the session. He commended their collective efforts which enabled Covenant University to maintain its position as Nigeria’s number one university and one of the best globally.
According to him, the remarkable strides and accolades recorded during the 2024/2025 academic year were possible because both academic and non-teaching staff gave their utmost to ensure a smooth and impactful session.
Professor Anake also seized the opportunity to formally unveil the new management team of the University. The session featured a special prayer led by the University Chaplain, Pastor Seun Olabajo, seeking divine wisdom and guidance for the newly appointed leaders.
The assembly concluded with a closing prayer by the Chancellor, who prayed for journey mercies for all faculty and staff as they commence their annual leave. He specifically asked for safety on roads, railways, and waterways, while declaring that everyone would return refreshed and reinvigorated for the new academic session.
