After two days of intense and rigorous scrutiny, the National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation teams to Covenant University have commended the quality of academic and research resources available in the institution, according to their preliminary reports.
While presenting the report on behalf of the delegation to the reaccreditation exercise of the Demography and Social Statistics programme of Covenant, Professor Bamidele Badejo commended the quality of books and electronic subscriptions available for learners and researchers under the programme. He noted the novelty and attractiveness of the internal quality assurance mechanism put in place by the Department. He called on other universities and departments in the country to adopt the laid down model of Covenant.
Professor Badejo, who led three other members of the delegation to the exercise, called for more collaboration between the Department and relevant bodies in the nation, towards establishing a robust academia-industry relationship in areas of conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops. “We are partners in progress, and we are keen on the continuous development of this programme at all level,” he added.
He applauded the Management of Covenant for the robust investment and sponsorship drive towards staff development and called for a diversified approach in the direction of sponsorship so as not to bring an unnecessary financial burden on other aspects of the University’s operations.
Similarly, the team-lead of the reaccreditation exercise to the Marketing Programme, Professor Sylva E. Kalu, said his team was impressed with the solid infrastructural and academic resources in place, which was foundational for quality teaching and research endeavour in any reputable institution.
Professor Kalu, however, told the University Management about the prospect and possibility of making the programme evolve into a Department through building an outstanding programme base, with measurable outcomes.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, commended the team for the depth and quality of work brought to bear on both programmes, and above all for showing altruistic interest in a bid to ensure that both programmes are on sound footing.
Professor Adebayo pledged the University Management’s continuous support for all her programmes, while at the same time intensifying efforts towards ensuring that appropriate collaborations were in place where needed, and their frontiers expanded where necessary, in the quest to enhance research partnership drive.
“Once the quality control system of any organization is down, every other thing will automatically go down. As such, we will keep working to ensure that our quality assurance and academic standard unit keep functioning at optimal capacity,” he enthused.
Professor Adebayo promised to look into the various suggestions and recommendations made towards strengthening the profiles of the programmes in focus to make them viable and highly competitive. “We are particular about due diligence, with the understanding that the investment of today is what determines the quality and outcomes of tomorrow,” he added.
Present at the exit meetings were the Registrar, Dr Oluwasegun Omidiora, other members of the University Management, Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Akan Williams, Dean, College of Management and Social Sciences, Professor Uwalomwa Uwuigbe, Head, Department of Economics, Professor Evan Osabuohien, Head, Department of Business Management, Professor Anthonia Adeniji and other senior faculty in both Departments.
