A Mechanical Engineering student of Covenant University, David Enumah, has emerged the winner of the Sixth CODET South-West Competition for 2023 in the single project category, surpassing students from The Bells University and University of Ibadan.

It is worthy of note, that at the last edition, Covenant University emerged at the zonal level, and also came tops at the National level in the competition.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adebayo, was duly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olujide Adekeye, alongside the Acting Registrar, Mrs. Regina Tobi-David. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, welcomed all representatives and participants in the Sixth South-West CODET Competition, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, and declared the competition open.

He stated that he was pleased to see some of the projects being displayed. In his words, “Advances in engineering, has been pivotal to human development ever since the invention of the wheel in the fourth millennium BC in rural Mesopotamia.”

Professor Olujide Adekeye noted that, in the past one and half century, specifically, engineering and technology have transformed the world, contributing considerably to improved health care, quality of life, nutrition, housing, transport, communication and many other benefits.

He added that the critical role of engineering in impacting other wide ranging tenacious challenges confronting our society worldwide is also broadly recognized. He stressed that engineering is therefore regarded as a focus area that can ultimately help continents like Africa, develop potentials for economic growth, and make accelerated progress towards the attainment of the sustainable development goals.

The projects entered in the competition were single handedly made, with the oversight of their respective supervisors. The judges for the competition include Engr. Dr. Felix Ajuebor (Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi), Engr. Adewale Adeyemi (Chairman, Society of Engineers, Ota branch) and Engr. Simeon Eze (Asset Manager, Shell Gas, Ota).

The student from the University of Ibadan, presented a project titled, ‘Head Mounted Computer Mouse’, which was made specifically for physically challenged persons. The Covenant University student presented a project titled, ‘Development of a Road Sweeper Vehicle,’ while The Bells University presented ‘Design and Fabrication of Scrotum Cooling Device.’ The presentations also included the practical application of each their projects.

It was quite a herculean task for the judges having examined each project thoroughly while asking series of questions. Finally, Covenant University emerged winner with a score of 79.8%, as against The Bells University’s 59.5% score and 68% for University of Ibadan.

The Dean, College of Engineering, Professor David Olukanni, congratulated each of the students for their outstanding projects, and   appreciated the judges for a job well done and for making sure the exercise was completed in record time.
