CODET Competition 2023: Covenant University Engineering Graduate Bags Top Prize

David Enumah of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Covenant University has emerged as the winner of the 2023 Student Engineering Competition organised by the Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology (CODET).

Enumah was declared the winner of the 5th edition of the competition on Saturday, August 5, 2023, for his ‘Road Sweeper Vehicle’ project, designed to sweep large expanses of land in record time while at the same time taking the stress off the drivers of the vehicle.

He said he was motivated to undertake the project to improve the efficiency of campus keepers while, at the same time, addressing the environmental challenges that arise after every windy rain in Covenant due to the high vegetation and adorning trees.

According to him, "The leaves from these trees after heavy rainfall usually efface the aesthetic beauty of the campus, and I felt there was a need to provide a better way of speedily carrying out clean-up exercises."

Enumah went further to state that, having observed the tedious nature of cleaning the entire University campus, it was important to him to evolve a solution that would take away the stress, save man-hours, and above all, ameliorate the health concerns of Covenant University’s Campus Keepers.

David Enumah had earlier in the year won the South-West CODET Competition held at Covenant University to advance to the national finals, which comprised all geographical Zones in Nigeria.

The Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities (CODET) is a Sub-Committee under the Education and Training Committee of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), with the responsibility of organizing engineering-related competitions annually.

CODET organizes its annual competition and also gives prizes to the winners in the following categories: Best Engineering Graduate Competition, Engineering Students’ Project Competition, and Engineering Academic Publication Competition. Universities, corporate organizations, and public-spirited individuals usually sponsor these competitions.

It will be recalled that Covenant University performed excellently at the 2021 edition of the competition, emerging as National Champion in the Group Project Category for their project on 'Energy Recovery from Cassava Peel for Replacement of Firewood in Local Communities (Biogas Production from Cassava Peels),'  and also emerging first in the Group Project Category of the 2017 edition for her submission on Mechatronics in Irrigation, and clinching the second position in the Single Project Category with the Nano Fridge Project at the same event.
